This is the conclusion I reached after a very interesting discussion with Prof. Florin Colceag, a great genius of Romania, professor of mathematics and "trainer of geniuses", in his turn. His view of what is happening in Romania and in the world today is thought-provoking and makes us want change as soon as possible. He believes that the Romanian nation is at the bottom of the pit and if it sinks a millimeter lower it could disappear. But everything can be turned around through education. What is needed is a reform that requires no effort and no budget, just good will. And the first thing we all need to do is to think about and try to understand who we are, where we come from, where we are going and what our job is on this earth.

Prof. Florin Colceag: We have in this time period and in the previous time period the same problem: a very poor understanding of humanity's role on earth. We don't know what we're doing on earth, and for the moment we're acting as if the earth is a consumable. We are not interested in maintaining it. This means that at the moment humanity is in a permanent identity crisis in the first place, not only about the way we act on Earth, and this spills over into education. We are not educating ourselves to understand our role. In the last centuries we have learned to be competitive and to fight with each other to have more, better, but we have not developed our personality side. We have learned to learn, but not to have more soul, more love, more understanding. Because we have made confusions and we are still making the same confusions with increasing risks. The big confusion is that we thought that who is higher is stronger and if he is stronger he is smarter. And if he's smart, that means he's handsome. That's incomplete thinking, incomplete induction that leads nowhere. It can be corrected through education if first of all we know who we are and what our purpose on earth is.

How do we recognize gifted children?

The thing about gifted children is this: they have an inkling of who they are. The contact it has with its mother's mind means that when it's born it has a picture of the world. Quite a broad picture. I have two extremely interesting cases. Two children who from birth spoke only English. At home they all spoke Romanian. Because one of the mothers translated into English during pregnancy and the other one listened only to English songs. And the mother's experience was imprinted in the child's mind. And when he comes out, he comes out with the lesson learned.

But not all moms are the same...

Sure. At the moment, anyone who had any idea who they are, what their job is and where they are going, doesn't know. Banks no longer support the economy. That was their original purpose. Now they're just doing the scrounging. Health no longer prevents disease, it sells drugs. Education no longer forms personalities, it sells diplomas, it forms CVs. Everywhere you go and everywhere you look, everyone has lost their horizon. It's total chaos. You can't find institutions, people who know. This "to know" becomes important. Who are you, what's your business, what's your job? That's what the kid wants to know from the start. What good is he? People have learned to think in terms "what would you like most. But they never ask where you could be of more use, with what you can, with what you know. The school doesn't teach them where they can be of more use because it doesn't emphasize their qualities. If he gets a "B," it's a bummer. He drops off the podium and he's nobody. During that time his qualities disappear because they're not being used. This kid has to make sense. If he knows who he is, what his job is, he automatically has a passion, and school develops by cultivating passions. Personality develops by cultivating passions! Changing the education system in this direction is very simple because it's almost effortless and budget-free. All you have to do is to stop tormenting teachers to go against nature. Teachers should be about developing personalities, not writing tons of papers to pass on as reports. The teacher has a soul that is tormented, stressed, but if it is nurtured by seeing the joy in the eyes of the children, it loses the negative states. It's liberating. Now there's a system of fear and corruption at work: fear of the grade, fear of failing, fear of everything.

But why do you think it's not happening?

We've gone on to imitate a system that was generated by George Bush Senior that was called "No child left behind" and that was based on credits, competitions and entry to the next stage, if the child covered their credits and grades. I have seen in the United States the results: they were disastrous. I met a very bright boy with a passion for math. When I asked him if he would like me to give him an interesting geometry problem, he replied: "No, because I have so much homework that I don't have time to do anything else. And if I don't do my homework, I don't get a good grade and I don't get a scholarship. And my parents are poor.". In our country, they introduced this program without scholarships. And so it killed the passions, it killed the joy of discovery, it completely killed the revelation of astonishment, of living, of the joy of doing something. And then of course we have a disaster in education. They have imitated without thinking, without knowing, and a system based on command and control has been imposed. This is not militancy. Children live under so much stress that many of them are on the edge.

In 20 years' time we expect other jobs to disappear, other professions to appear, we will no longer go to the doctor but to the computer and children will have robots to do their homework.

In 20 years' time we will probably end up in this situation: the food crisis will be, let's say, overcome by in vitro cultures of cells that will produce food and that will come out with 3D printers to the standards of tasty, nutritious food. Maybe we will have energy, maybe we will no longer be interested in wages because money has become a vicious, toxic thing globally and you have to detach yourself from it; maybe there will be sustainable homes.
